About Ekhnaten Festival

The Ekhnaten International Short Film Festival began its journey in 2016 with its inaugural edition, showcasing exceptional short films from around the world while celebrating diverse voices in cinema. After a successful first edition, the festival took an extended hiatus due to logistical challenges and organizational restructuring. We are proud to announce our triumphant return in 2024 with our second edition, stronger and more committed than ever to supporting independent filmmakers and promoting cultural exchange through the art of short filmmaking.

To promote international understanding through cinema, showcase diverse voices from around the world, and support emerging filmmakers while celebrating the art of storytelling. We aim to bridge cultures through the universal language of film and provide a platform for meaningful dialogue about global issues.

To establish Ekhnaten Festival as the premier destination for cinematic excellence in the MENA region, fostering cultural exchange and artistic innovation. We envision a future where our festival serves as a catalyst for international cooperation in cinema and a launchpad for emerging talent.

Festival Organizers

Hassan Hosny
Festival Director
Hassan Hosny brings over 20 years of experience in film production and festival management to his role as Festival Director. With a background in cinema studies from Cairo University and extensive experience in the Egyptian film industry, Hassan has been instrumental in establishing Ekhnaten Festival as a premier international event. His vision for the festival encompasses both artistic excellence and cultural diplomacy, working to position Egyptian cinema on the global stage while fostering international collaborations. Hassan has previously worked with several major film festivals across the MENA region and has been recognized for his contributions to Arab cinema. Under his leadership, the festival has expanded its international reach while maintaining its commitment to showcasing regional talent. His deep understanding of both commercial and arthouse cinema allows him to curate programs that appeal to diverse audiences while maintaining artistic integrity.
Meena Gabry
Programme Coordinator
Meena Gabry serves as the Programme Coordinator, bringing her expertise in film curation and international relations to the festival. With a Master's degree in Film Studies and over 12 years of experience in festival programming, Meena has developed relationships with filmmakers, distributors, and festival programmers worldwide. Her multilingual abilities and cultural sensitivity make her invaluable in coordinating international submissions and managing relationships with foreign delegations. Meena's programming philosophy focuses on creating meaningful dialogue between different cinematic traditions while ensuring representation of diverse voices and perspectives. She has been instrumental in developing the festival's educational initiatives and workshop programs, working closely with film schools and emerging filmmakers. Her attention to detail and organizational skills ensure that each edition of the festival runs smoothly while maintaining the highest standards of programming excellence. Meena is passionate about supporting women filmmakers and has initiated several programs aimed at promoting gender equality in cinema.
Raheem Saad
Festival Secretary
Raheem Saad oversees the administrative operations of the festival as Festival Secretary, ensuring seamless coordination between all departments and stakeholders. With a background in arts administration and event management spanning 15 years, Raheem has become the backbone of the festival's organizational structure. His expertise extends to budget management, vendor coordination, and protocol management for international guests and dignitaries. Raheem's meticulous approach to logistics and his ability to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously have been crucial to the festival's growth and success. He manages relationships with government entities, sponsors, and media partners, ensuring that all aspects of the festival comply with regulations and meet the highest professional standards. His diplomatic skills and cultural awareness make him particularly effective in managing international collaborations and cultural exchange programs. Raheem is also responsible for the festival's archival systems and has been working to digitize the festival's historical records, creating a valuable resource for film scholars and researchers interested in the evolution of Egyptian and Arab cinema.

Previous Festival Editions

The Ekhnaten Festival has held two editions, with our inaugural festival in 2016 followed by a long hiatus due to logistical challenges. We are excited to present our second edition in 2024, marking our return to celebrating exceptional short filmmaking.

2024 Festival - Second Edition

Our triumphant return after 8 years, featuring enhanced programming and expanded international participation.

Festival Hiatus (2017-2023)

Due to logistical challenges and organizational restructuring, the festival was on hiatus for several years. During this period, our team worked diligently to enhance the festival's infrastructure, develop stronger international partnerships, and create a more robust platform for showcasing short films. This extended break has allowed us to return with renewed vision and improved capabilities for our 2024 edition.
